iPhone FAQ: How To Store Contacts With Phone Extensions

You have to wait for the annoying, press 1 to continue, press to 2 to continue etc after which the person you are looking for will finally answer the call. This can definitely be a frustrating and an annoying experience. The problem here arises mainly due to the fact that dialing the extension along with the main number will not work. There needs to be some sort of connection between the internal phone system and the caller before extensions can work. Hence dialing the extensions in one go prevents the system from recognizing them. Due to this, mobile phones generally have an option by which a pause can be inserted between the main number and the extensions. This allows automated phone systems to read the main number and then based on the pause, recognize and dial the required extension. These numbers with a pause and extension can be stored in the same way a normal number is stored in your contacts.

Now I am sure some of you didn’t know about this feature and are getting excited to know whether phone extensions can be saved in your iPhones contacts. The answer is a resounding ‘yes’. The steps involved in this process are mentioned below: 1.    Tap on the ‘Phone’ icon on the iPhone to open the phone app. 2.    You can store the new phone extension either by editing a previously stored contact or by creating a new contact. To edit an existing contact follow, tap on contact>edit. To create a new contact tap the ‘+’icon on the screen. 3.    Select the Mobile field of a contact. 4.    Now a screen with a number pad appears where you can either add/edit a phone number. 5.    Enter the main number you wish to store. 6.    Time for the clever bit, based on what kind of phone system you need to call enter ‘#, + or *’ followed by the extension numbers. 7.    For example, if the extension you need to make is *123 then enter ‘*’then 123. 8.    If the phone system happens to have a pause before giving you the options to enter extension numbers then simply enter a pause(shown as a comma) by tapping on the ‘Pause’ button. 9.    Finally, save the number and enjoy phone extensions on your iPhone. You will no longer have to wait for those nasty automated phone systems to spell numbers out and will be instantly connected to the person you want to talk to.
