Will the iPhone 5 Launch in Summer After All?

The Apple debate du jour centers on the release date for the next generation iPhone. Every analyst, supplier, blogger and stranger on the street seems to have a theory with crumbs of evidence to back it up. Shannon Cross of Cross Research has an opinion that’s shocking by comparison—the iPhone will make its debut in June 2011, on the anniversary of every iPhone since 2007. Cross released this statement: “Recent investor attention has focused on a potential delay in the launch of iPhone5. We believe, however, that all the pieces are in place to move ahead with iPhone5 this Summer: (1) WWDC (June 6th) will focus on the future of both Mac OS X and iOS; (2) iPad2 just introduced a major platform migration, and (3) Apple’s North Carolina data center is near operational status. We also point to the significant advantage Apple gains in pushing the pace, and keeping new product in front of consumers. The company would waste this development advantage, were it to extend the cycle by waiting for specific components, which are available simultaneously to competitors.” Cross supplied more details: “We believe iPhone 5 will bear a close resemblance to iPad2 internals (A5 processor, baseband for 3G models, cameras, gyroscope), with a slightly wider screen and modified antenna/case design. Therefore, with limited new changes, the potential information leaks have been reduced. We think Apple has learned from last year (when iPhone 4 was leaked) to place tighter information controls in place.”

That last sentence really tells the tale. Apple will go to great lengths to keep the real facts about its upcoming products a secret until the very last minute, so maybe that’s why those sources predicting delays haven’t heard anything about the production of the iPhone 5 yet.
