Will T-Mobile and Sprint Get the iPhone Next?

If you’re one of the many people waiting for the release of the iPhone 5 before buying a new handset, you may find a more competitive field to choose from. While buyers now have a choice between AT&T and Verizon, rumors suggest that the next iPhone could be available from all four major US carriers, including T-Mobile and Sprint. Back when the iPhone was new, the exclusivity with AT&T was mutually positive for both Apple and the carrier, but now that the iconic phone has captured a big chunk of the smartphone market, everyone wants in. The launch of the Verizon iPhone wasn’t as big a deal as expected, probably due to the fact that the model offered was the iPhone 4, which has been available from AT&T since last summer. The really big show will happen this summer, when the iPhone 5 goes on sale. With two carriers already vying for your business, why not make it three—or four? While Apple is currently producing two different models of the iPhone 4, GSM for AT&T and CDMA for Verizon, the company is expected to merge the two into a “world phone” that will work on either carrier. Since the Verizon and Sprint networks are similar, why couldn’t it work on theirs, too?

There has already been speculation that Apple has been in talks with T-Mobile about the iPhone, but nothing definite seems imminent. But if the iPhone 5 could be available from four competing carriers, this could lead to great deals and better service for all customers. Buyers could choose the carrier that gives the best reception in their area, or examine all the plans and prices available before deciding on one. This may not happen in time for the iPhone 5, but there’s no reason it can’t come true at a later date.
