White iPhone 4 DOA?

Alas, the shiny unicorn that was the white iPhone 4 may have been just a pipe dream. At midnight Eastern time, the Apple site went down for maintenance. When it came back up, all mentions of the white iPhone 4 SKU were gone. Does this mean we won’t be getting the white iPhone this spring, as Apple promised a few months ago? It certainly looks that way. Back before Christmas, Apple sent signage to its stores for a white iPhone 4 that was supposed to make its appearance in “spring’ of 2011. Well, spring sprung last month and we’re still waiting. That teaser about a white iPhone in early 2011 never really made sense. If Apple didn’t release a white version along with the standard black model back in June, why do it now, with just a few months left until the iPhone 5 comes out? Why didn’t a white Verizon iPhone 4 come out in February? If there was really a white iPhone on the way, wouldn’t we have seen a press release by now, or maybe a mention slipped into that iPad 2 press event last month? The snarky way Apple CEO Steve Jobs pointed out that there would be a white iPad 2 from day one makes it seem likely that there will be a white iPhone to go with it—but not until the next generation.

I’m sure this is disappointing for anyone who really, really wanted a white iPhone 4, but is it worth the trouble and expense for Apple, especially at this late date in the product cycle? In the long run, no, so just pin your hopes on a white iPhone 5 in June. Or September. Or whenever.
