Leaked Photos of Dock Connector Give Clues to iPhone 5

If this is really a component of the iPhone 5 coming out this summer, we could be looking at a very different device from any Apple phone we’ve seen before. Chinese website tw.apple.pro posted a couple of photos—one of what they claim is an actual iPhone 5 component (a 30-pin dock connector cable, part# 821-1300-02 HF/c1) compared to a dock connector from the current iPhone 4. With the exception of a slightly narrower connector and cable where the part connects to the iPhone’s main board, the supposed new part is almost the same as the corresponding part in the current model. So what inside knowledge can we glean from this photo and the site’s interpretations of it? For one thing, that the rumored larger screen won’t be happening. More interesting is possibility of a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. Neither of these sounds especially likely, but since in the past apple.pro has posted legit photos of later-released Apple products, their claims are worth a look. Having said that, I don’t buy either claim. If Apple thought the iPhone really needed a slide-out keyboard, they would have included one on an earlier model. Apple today is all about eliminating keyboards and buttons in favor of more touch-screen functionality. I’m also dubious of the part about the lack of a larger screen. With so many competing smartphones already sporting 4” screens, it just makes sense to put a bigger display on the iPhone 5.

Could the part be real but the interpretations be wrong? Maybe Apple has some tricks up its sleeve that this site doesn’t know about yet. Another day, another rumor or two, but we won’t know anything for sure until summer.
