iPhone 5 to Have Slide-Out Keyboard?

It’s a new week, and with it comes new rumors from Taiwan about future products from Apple. According to Apple.pro, Apple is testing three very different prototypes for the iPhone 5, including one with a slide-out keyboard. This seems incongruous for Apple, which is so dedicated to touch-screen technology for its mobile devices. The slide-out keyboard seems so last-decade, like those T-Mobile Sidekicks that were the phone du jour for celebs like Paris Hilton a few years ago. And wouldn’t a concealed keyboard add thickness to a phone that’s prized for its slimness? OTOH, the addition of a keyboard could lure some die-hard BlackBerry users who can’t imagine life without their teeny little keyboards. If you don’t like that rumor (and I don’t), there are also allegedly more prototypes including one very much like the iPhone 4, but with an upgraded battery and an 8-megapixel camera. This one makes more sense, and I won’t be surprised if we see similar cameras on future models of the iPad and iPod Touch, too.

Does the fact that Apple is testing several prototypes indicate there may be more than one model of the iPhone 5? We’re already hearing talk about a smaller, cheaper Mini iPhone in the works, so maybe Apple phone customers will have more choices when the iPhone 5 is released this summer.
