iPhone 5 to Have Dual SIM Cards?

Ever wished you could have two different lines at once on your iPhone, maybe one for home and one for business? According to a rumor originating with Chinese reseller of smartphone parts iDealsChina, the iPhone 5 will have a pair of SIM card trays that will support dual-SIM cards. This would allow the owner to have two lines of service with separate numbers, which could come in handy for frequent travelers who need a home SIM plus a global SIM for roaming, or both a business and personal line on the same service. 9to5Mac contributed another suggestion, that maybe the iPhone 5 will be a world phone using Qualcomm’s Gobi chip with both GSM and CDMA support. This would allow the phone to be used on either Verizon or AT&T’s networks in the U.S. or abroad. While this sounds good in theory, doesn’t it mean you would need two separate service accounts, one with AT&T and one with Verizon, both with two-year contracts? Would the convenience really be worth it? The business plus personal lines idea might have appeal if you had both of them with one carrier and got a package rate, but again, not if it involves two accounts with two contracts.

I’m not sure if I buy this particular rumor because it doesn’t seem that practical for the average iPhone user—maybe as an option or added feature on the most expensive model, but not on every iPhone 5. We’re still a few months away from the launch of the iPhone 5, so we’re going to be hearing a lot of rumors between now and then. Maybe I’d buy this one if there were more information available.
