iPhone 5 to Have Dual Baseband?

There are certainly a lot of good reasons for Apple to offer one iPhone that works on both the AT&T and Verizon networks. It would make manufacturing easier and cheaper for Apple. Buyers would not be stuck with one wireless network for the life of the phone. If they wanted to change networks, they wouldn’t have to buy another phone. World travelers would be able to slip in SIM cards for wherever they needed to use the iPhone. So why is Apple still using two separate chipsets? According to a new rumor from ITProPortal, that could change with the iPhone 5. A conversation with Qualcomm VP Enrico Salvatori suggests that Apple will be switching to a Qualcomm dual baseband chipset for the iPhone 5. In the case that Qualcomm does not have a chipset equipped with NFC technology in time for the iPhone 5, the alternative would be an MDM9625 widely used in China, which supports HSPA+ Release 9, EV-DO Revision B, EV-DO Advanced and TD-SCDMA. It’s definitely to Apple’s advantage to adopt a single dual baseband chipset for all models, since the move could save $80 million over the 40 million units projected to be made this year.
