iPhone 5 to Have A5 Dual Core Processor

Apple’s iOS 4.3 upgrade was just released Wednesday morning, but sharp-eyed coders have already uncovered hints that a dual-core processor similar to the A5 in the iPad 2 is being tested for the upcoming iPhone 5. While exploring code on iOS 4.3, iOS developer Filippo Bigarella unearthed the code name “N94AP” that, based on past device code names, would seem to indicate an unreleased iPhone. The N94AP name was linked to “S5L8940,” which is the name for the A5 within the iOS code. This is not surprising, since the A5’s predecessor the A4 was released first on the iPad, followed by the iPhone 4, the iPod Touch and Apple TV. The A5 dual-core processor is already getting raves for the blazingly fast speed it gives to the iPad 2, which should be a potent selling point as the latest incarnation of Apple’s tablet goes up against a collection of would-be “iPad killers” this year. An iPhone 5 with that same speed would be powerful competition for the faster, cheaper Android smartphones coming out now. While all the rumors of a faster, feature-packed and possible less fragile iPhone 5 with a larger screen display and more RAM should build anticipation for the device when it ships this summer, but it may be one factor in the lackluster sales of the Verizon iPhone 4 released a few weeks ago. If your Verizon contract hasn’t expired yet, why not wait a couple of months and get the very newest model?

Especially if those nasty antenna problems get solved by the time the iPhone 5 goes on sale. While not all the iPhone 5 rumors are likely to be proven true, the one about the A5 dual-core processor seem like pretty close to a sure thing.
