iPad News: Apple COO Confirms Cheaper iPhones

Bernstein Research analyst Toni Sacconaghi had a very meeting last week with Apple honchos COO Tim Cook, CFO Peter Oppenheimer and VP of Internet Services Eddy Cue, one that tells us a lot about what we can expect in the future from the maker of the iPhone. The main point Sacconaghi took from the meeting is that Apple is looking at new ways to capitalize on the growing market for both the iPhone and the iPad. More specifically, the analyst thinks Cook “appeared to reaffirm the notion that Apple is likely to develop lower priced offerings” for the iPhone and is looking for “clever things” to get into the lucrative prepaid market. Apple intends to expand its line so that its products will not be “just for the rich.” This would seem to confirm earlier reports that Apple is developing a less-expensive iPhone to take on the lower-end Android smartphone market. Cook also expressed interest in making major moves into China, which he called a “classic prepaid market.” Another plan in the works is greatly expanding the number of iPhone carriers worldwide, as Oppenheimer pointed out that Apple has only 175 carriers today, while rival Research In Motion has 550. This would fit in with the rumors that the iPhone 5 will be a “world phone,” capable of operating in most countries across the globe. Apple has already managed to lure many enterprise users way from RIM’s BlackBerry, and an iPhone that works across hundreds of carriers would give them one more advantage. A high-end iPhone for business, a lower-priced model for personal use, plus a prepaid version would go far to meet Apple’s long-term goal of world domination—and outselling the coming wave of Android phones.
