Does the White iPad Reveal a Clue About the iPhone 5?

When Apple revealed the iPad 2 last week and announced that it would be available in both black and white models, this raised the question, “So what happened to the white iPhone 4?” As I stated earlier, it’s still MIA and not expected to appear at any time in the future. So why can Apple make a white iPad but not a white iPhone? Probably because of the structural differences, since the iPad has an acrylic front and metal back, while the iPhone 4 has bulletproof glass front and back. The glass in the back is allegedly what caused all the problems with the white iPhone 4, especially the one involving flare when taking photos due to the translucency of the white-painted surface. The glass front and back also weren’t quite as bulletproof as some users would have liked, causing the handset to be rated as the most breakable smartphone on the market. Could both these problems lead Apple to rethink the use of glass for the iPhone 5? Abandoning the all-glass model could make for a less fragile version and also facilitate the making of a white iPhone 5.

Of course, it’s possible that Apple could have totally solved all these problems and have a sturdier all-glass iPhone 5 in the works, with models available in black and white. Or the iPhone could be a totally new redesign with different materials—ones more conducive to producing models in different colors. The very fact that the iPad 2 comes in both black and white from day one suggests that Apple has not given up on offering the iPhone in two colors—and we’ll probably be seeing both of them come June.
