Did Apple and Verizon Plan iPhone 5 Delay?

Apple has done several things this year that were a bit unexpected. The first was putting out the Verizon iPhone 4 in February, another the release of the white iPhone 4 in April. Both seemed oddly timed, since for the last few years, the iPhone has been updated every June. Why put out new phones that will become last year’s model within a few months? Now rumors are going around that the iPhone 5 isn’t coming until sometime in the fall, and there are no definite reasons why. A report from Beatweek suggests that all these events are connected—and could have been planned by Apple and Verizon as far back as last year. If Apple already knew in 2010 that the iPhone 5 would be released later in the year, that would explain a lot of things. Why delay the iPhone 5 when so many cool new Android smartphones are coming on the market? One reason could be that Apple is planning a total redo of the iPhone, a model so revolutionary that no other smartphone can compete with it. Why just put out a slightly upgraded iPhone 5 when Apple could do something that will astound the industry the same way the original iPhone did four years ago?

That could explain why Apple and Verizon agreed to release the Verizon model of the iPhone earlier this year, to give the carrier the chance to give its existing subscribers the opportunity to buy and iPhone 4. This move would also give both Verizon and AT&T time to upgrade their systems to 4G, which is expected to be included on the iPhone 5—whenever it arrives.
