Apple Planning 64GB iPhone?

Do most iPhone owners want a 64GB model? Do they need one? There could be such a model in Apple’s future, as an iPhone prototype with 64GB has been spotted in Hong Kong. Unwire.hk claims that a 64GB iPhone is available in limited quantities from the city’s largest grey market, Sin Tak. The alleged iPhone has the marking XXGB and the FCC ID as BCG-XXXXXX. The model number is XXXXX, but also listed is model number 995-6049LL. So it is real or phony? Hey, it comes from China, so who knows? It’s doubtful that Apple had anything to do with this, but the idea of a 64GB iPhone has surely occurred to them. On one hand, it would be great for those with a lot of media and data stored who want all of it on their iPhone. OTOH, it would be even more expensive than the 16GB and 32GB versions. But do iPhone users really need the extra storage? The answer may be “no” very soon, when Apple’s cloud-based revamp of the MobileMe service becomes available. This service would allow users of all Apple mobile devices to access their music, video and data wirelessly instead of having it all stored on each individual device. This has been rumored to be the reason Apple is developing a lighter, cheaper iPhone—because it can get by with smaller amounts of RAM. The cloud-based service could be ready in time for the launch of the iPhone 5 this summer.

If it is, that could definitely influence the purchasing choices of iPhone 5 buyers. Why pay extra for a 32GB model when you don’t need the extra RAM? And why bother to offer a 64GB iPhone 5 when buyers have less reason to spend the extra money? Those guys in China can mockup all the fake iPhones they want, but I don’t see this one being part of Apple’s future.
