Another 64GB iPhone 4 Leaked

I’m starting to wonder if there are guys lurking in doorways in less-savory parts of Hong Kong, whispering to passersby, “Psst! Wanna buy a 64GB iPhone?” There sure seem to be a lot of them turning up lately. But unlike the one in shots from earlier in the week, this one can be viewed in action. Late Tuesday, MIC Gadget posted photos and video of what is claimed to be an engineered prototype of an iPhone 4 leaked from the Foxconn factory in Shenzhen, China. Given the number of not-yet-released Apple products allegedly “leaked” by Foxconn, you have to wonder why Apple is still using them. The guys at MIC Gadget say they’ve tested it and call it “the real thing,” and not hacked. They also call it similar to the “lost” iPhone prototype that got Gizmodo dropped from Apple’s invitation list. The back of the device bears the same XXGB marking as other Apple prototypes and a model number of 995-6049LL. On firing it up and going into Settings/General, the phone was revealed to be a 64GB model running iOS 4.1. Unlike the current models of the iPhone 4, this one has no plus or minus symbols on the volume buttons and no silver ring around the lens. So does this tell us that Apple will be adding a 64GB model to the iPhone 5 line coming this summer? Not necessarily.

The similarities to the Gizmodo prototype suggest that both came from the Device Verification Test phase that takes place right before production. That would indicate that the 64GB prototype is a product of the testing phase preceding the release of the iPhone 4, but Apple decided against marketing it to the public. If Apple didn’t see a reason to add the 64GB model to the line last year, it’s doubtful they will now. See the MIC Gadget video here.
