White iPhone 4 Finally Arrives in Stores

Probably to convince us that it’s actually true, Apple issued a press release on Wednesday confirming what we’ve pretty much known for the last month or so. Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide product marketing Philip Schiller stated, “The white iPhone 4 has finally arrived and it's beautiful. We appreciate everyone who has waited patiently while we've worked to get every detail right.” I’m not sure about that waiting patiently part, since some Apple fans have grown downright impatient over the last ten months. The release continues, “iPhone 4 is the most innovative phone in the world, featuring Apple’s stunning Retina™ display, the highest resolution display ever built into a phone resulting in super crisp text, images and video, and FaceTime®, which makes video calling a reality.” The shiny unicorn will be available in both AT&T and Verizon models, and can be purchased at Apple retail stores, Apple.com, AT&T/Verizon outlets and authorized Apple resellers. Pricing remains the same as for the original black model—$199 on contract for the 16GB model, $299 for 32GB. So will eager customers flock to Apple stores today, eager to finally get their hands on this long-awaited gadget? Is there a sufficient audience of fashionistas who want their iPhone to match their iPad?

One big deterrent to those who are considering picking up their own white iPhone 4 would seem to be the contract issue. Subscribers who purchased an iPhone in June of 2009 still have a few weeks left on their contracts and will almost surely hold out until then rather than pay those nasty early termination fees. The other is the coming of the iPhone 5. We know it’s coming, we just don’t know exactly when. If Apple officially announces that the iPhone 5 has been delayed until later in the year, that might encourage more buyers to take the plunge and go for the white iPad 4.
