Verizon iPhone Sales Slower Than Expected?

After an initial flurry of preorder activity, sales of the Verizon iPhone have slowed down, so that the new CDMA model is barely outselling the existing iPhone 4 from AT&T. Boy Genius Report leaked some figures on first-week sales of the Verizon iPhone from five Apple stores, and they’re less than impressive: Thursday: Verizon = 909, AT&T = 539 Friday: Verizon = 916, AT&T = 680 Saturday: Verizon = 660, AT&T = 471 Sunday: Verizon = 796, AT&T = 701 Monday: Verizon = 711, AT&T = 618 So what happened to all those Verizon customers who’ve been eagerly awaiting their chance to get an iPhone and the fed-up AT&T subscribers dying to switch? A significant number of both are probably waiting for their current contracts to expire so they can avoid paying those nasty early termination fees. Others are holding out for the iPhone 5 coming this summer. Was February really the prime time to launch a slightly different version of a phone that’s been out since last June and will be replaced in four more months?

Since a mere 14% of the early Verizon iPhone buyers were switching from AT&T, that doesn’t indicate a mass segment of the carrier’s base jumping ship at the first opportunity. Twice as many—30%—were former Android users. One bright side of the lukewarm sales figure is that the new converts to Verizon have not caused any evident slowdown to the network, so maybe a gradual influx of new traffic is a blessing in disguise.
