Verizon iPhone Has `Death Grip` Antenna Issues

Waiting until summer for the iPhone 5 is looking like a better idea all the time. While doing a series of performance tests, iLounge found that the Verizon iPhone 4 has problems similar to those that caused last summer’s PR debacle “antennagate.” Like the GSM iPhone 4 from AT&T, the Verizon model suffers from signal attenuation problems that cause it to lose considerable signal strength when it’s held in the “death grip” position. The “death grip” results from the user’s fingers covering the external antenna band. This isn’t the only problem, as the Wi-Fi reception also suffers when the iPhone is held too tightly with both hands while in landscape mode, which happens often while playing games. According to the iLounge tests, the signal attenuation occurs most frequently indoors and can be remedied with a bumper case.

OK, shouldn’t Apple have fixed this by now? When quizzed on this issue, Apple COO Tim Cook answered, “Obviously [the antenna] has to be optimized to work on the CDMA.” It sounds like it didn’t get “optimized” enough. This is not what potential buyers want to hear just two days before the Verizon iPhone 4 goes on sale to the public. There are already good reasons to bypass the iPhone 4 and wait for the iPhone 5 coming in only four months, and another one just got added to the list.
