Universal Bumper Cases Hit Apple Stores

Just ahead of the actual launch of the Verizon iPhone 4, Apple has quietly added a new bumper case to the lineup at Apple retail stores. The “universal” case features a slightly wider slot that can accommodate the different mute buttons of both the AT&T and Verizon versions of the iPhone. The mute switch was moved slightly on the CDMA model due to a tweaked antenna design. Hopefully, this will spare Verizon iPhone 4 buyers the problems of last summer’s “antennagate.” If you really must have this case right away, maybe so you can bring your “baby” home in it on February 10, check with your local Apple retail store before running over there, since this item is brand-new and not available in all locations yet. All of the bumper cases now sold at the Apple store online are still the GSM-only cases for $29.

Of course, you could poke a larger hole in an old case, but if you’re paying Verizon $199+ for the privilege of carrying around an iPhone, why not fork over a few more bucks and get the new one? I have to wonder how soon all iPhone 4 cases will be “universal” and fit both models. Probably as soon as the vendors sell off all their leftover “old” cases.
