The Top Five Ways Apple Can Steal the Spotlight from CES

The iTunes Mac App Store It can’t be a coincidence that Apple’s Mac App Store debuts on January 6, the same day CES opens. Following the success of the iTunes stores for music, TV, films and apps for iPhone and iPad, this seems like a natural progression, especially since Apple has stated its intention to “get back to the Mac.” Why just settle for controlling just the markets for smartphones, tablet computers and MP3 players when you can snag an even bigger chunk of the PC pie? Mac computers are already cooler and easier to use than the ones running Microsoft, so why not tempt new buyers with even more goodies that are only available for Apple users?

iOS 4.3, The Daily and iPad magazine subscriptions Both iOS 4.3 and Rupert Murdoch’s iPad-only newsmagazine The Daily were expected to arrive in December of 2010, but neither has surfaced yet, due to Apple’s ongoing wrangling with publishers over control and money. Since the major addition in the iOS 4.3 upgrade is rumored to be magazine subscription support, there’s no reason to let it out of the bag until an agreement can be made with publishers. A report this week showing the lackluster performance of existing publications on the iPad can’t make negotiations any easier. But if NewsCorps’s The Daily, which was developed with cooperation from Apple, is ready, that announcement alone should get some media attention.

The white iPhone 4 Signage already distributed to Apple retail stores shows that the long-awaited white iPhone 4 will finally hit stores in the spring. Why not herald its coming with a press conference next week? So what if it won’t actually be available for three months? Maybe a few photos of Apple’s version of the unicorn will convince buyers not to pay $300 for a conversion kit that kills their warranty.

The Verizon iPhone Verizon has lots of exciting news to reveal at CES—but none of it is about the Verizon iPhone. Rumors claim that Verizon will be showing off several spiffy new Android smartphones at CES and it holding out the news about the Verizon iPhone until after the convention is over. Not that this would prevent Apple from making its own announcement toward the end of the convention—or sending out invitations to the same press covering CES promising a major media event a few days later.

The iPad 2 I don’t really expect this last one, but I don’t totally discount it, either. Apple announced the first iPad on January 27, 2010, several months ahead of its launch in April. An Apple press event unveiling the next gen iPad could rain on its rivals’ parade, big time. Microsoft is expected to debut several competing tablets at CES, but since this is Microsoft, who really cares?
