The Countdown Begins for Verizon iPhone

Verizon won’t start selling the iPhone for a couple of weeks, but the carrier is stirring up anticipation ahead of time. While the official on-sale date for the Verizon iPhone is February 10, some selected existing customers have received e-mail instructions on how to pre-order a week before the iPhone becomes available to the public. Here’s a bit from the e-mail: “Phone 4 is coming to Verizon. Because we appreciate and value your loyalty, existing Verizon Wireless Customers will have an exclusive online purchase opportunity before iPhone 4 is available to everyone else. For you it begins 02.03.11. Order iPhone 4 from our reserved quantity on a first-come, first-served basis beginning at 3 AM Eastern.” According to Verizon, there will be a limited quantity of iPhone 4s available for pre-order, and when that supply is depleted, remaining orders will have to wait until the handsets go on sale to the public.

Pardon me if I find that hard to believe. Verizon has known for months that they would be getting the iPhone and reports from suppliers claim that the carrier has already placed orders for several million of the devices. But if making it sound like the iPhone will be in short supply lures Verizon customers to pre-order in droves, that makes for more exciting press, doesn’t it?
