See the First Verizon iPhone Commercial

I somehow doubt Apple had anything to do with this commercial, because it’s not clever enough for their standards. This is the very first ad for the Verizon iPhone, which we will no doubt be treated to ten times per night on primetime TV until the thing finally hits stores February 10. This commercial tries to create an air of excitement, like some fabulous event we’ve all been eagerly waiting for is finally about to arrive. A clock says 11:59, and a serious voice intones: “To our millions of customers, who never stopped believing this day would come…” Then the clock strikes 12, a girl smiles and says “Thank you.” C’mon, Verizon, get real. Anyone who really cares this much about having an iPhone already got one from AT&T. Most of those millions of people you’re thanking are probably just sticking with you because their two-year contracts haven’t run out yet. (See the commercial after the jump.) There are some products that could get away with this kind of hype—like the iPad 2—but not another version of a phone that’s been available from a rival carrier since last summer. If Verizon really wanted to lure paying, thinking customers into signing up for the iPhone, how about a commercial with real information, like cost, rates, coverage and the cool features of the CDMA version of the iPhone 4. That’s what’s going to sell Verizon iPhones, not a silly spot that insults our intelligence.
