New iOS Update Available as Apple Posts iOS 4.2.6 for the Verizon iPhone

Apple’s going to be well prepared for the multitudes of new iPhone owners joining the club over the next few weeks. Verizon Wireless will begin selling a CDMA version of the iPhone February 10, and Apple has already posted iOS 4.2.6 on its servers. When the Verizon iPhone was introduced at a media event in January, it was running 4.2.5, so it looks like Apple has done a bit of tweaking since then. Version 4.2.6 has been designed to run on Verizon’s CDMA network, and includes the cool feature Personal Hotspot that lets users to turn their iPhones into mobile hotspots. The Verizon version carries build number 8E200 and is a 642 MB download, slightly larger than the existing iOS for the GSM iPhone.

Version 4.2.6 is expected to have a very short life, since 4.3, which was anticipated to be the version shipped with the CDMA iPhone 4, is right around the corner. So why rush out this upgrade ten days before the Verizon iPhone goes on sale? Rumor has it that Apple sent review units of the Verizon iPhone 4 to a select group of writers today, and obviously, they want the device to be shown off to best advantage.
