Does `Ugly` App Encourage Bullying?

The new iPhone app called “Ugly Meter” sounds silly but not dangerous. The $.99 iPhone app uses facial recognition software to measure the symmetry of a person’s features. Just scan a photo of a subject and get a rating from 1 to 10, with 10 being the least desirable, since with it you get the message, “You’re so ugly, when you walk by the bathroom, the toilet flushes.” While this kind of thing could be fun among a bunch of adult friends drinking at a party, it could be devastating in the hands of teenage bullies who use it to cyberbully vulnerable peers. Lately the news has been full of sad stories about young people who chose to take their own lives after being tormented by vicious bullies, often other kids. Somehow this app made it past the standards Apple uses to decide which apps make it to the iTunes. Given the current climate of downright meanness, you just know obnoxious high school brats will be scanning unflattering shots of unfortunate classmates and posting them online with scathing messages. Isn’t technology wonderful?
