Does iOS 4.3 Reveal the Model Numbers for New iPhones?

For the last 24 hours or so, developers and geeks have been eagerly exploring the beta version of Apple’s latest system upgrade iOS 4.3 in hopes of unearthing tidbits of info, along with new features and how they work. This item concerns the model names for past, present and future incarnations of Apple’s mobile devices iPhone and iPad. iOS 4.3 contains these designations: iPad2,1? iPad2,2? iPad2,3? iPhone4,1 and ?iPhone4,2. Why three iPads and two iPhones? In the case of iPad 2.0, the most obvious answer is one version for AT&T, one for Verizon CDMA and one Wi-Fi only. For the iPhone, it’s iPhone 4.1 for the AT&T model currently on sale and iPhone 4.2 for the Verizon model coming out in February. The fact that iOS 4.3 namechecks iPhone 4 models but not iPhone 5 suggests that there will be another upgrade coming in time for the next launch in June—if not earlier.

It also suggests that the debut version of Verizon’s iPhone 4 will be capable of running iOS 4.3, but since the CDMA model will be out in early February, it will probably ship with the current iOS 4.2.1 or the rumored iOS 4.2.5 since the upgrade isn’t expected to go public until March.
