AT&T Offers iPhone Customers Free 3G Microcell Service

In the wake of the iPhone becoming available on Verizon, AT&T is pulling out every trick it can find to keep its subscribers onboard. Since the carrier has long been plagued by complaints from iPhone users about spotty coverage and dropped calls, AT&T has started sending e-mails to some of its customers offering them a free home 3G microcell worth $200 in return for signing on for another year. The freebie was offered as “our way of saying ‘thank you’ for your continued loyalty.” I think that’s a nice way of saying, “Please take this bribe for not bailing right now.” This is not the first time the company has tried this, since last July AT&T rolled out the program to customers in areas like New York City and San Francisco, where cell congestion has been an ongoing problem.

How does the microcell work? A home femtocell can greatly improve the strength of signals, especially in dead zones and fringe areas. This means better network performance and fewer dropped calls. Will this move convince disgruntled AT&T subscribers to stick with them? For many, it may be too little, too late. Maybe they should have worked harder at improving their service before they had competition.
