AT&T Confirms Mobile Hotspot Support for iPhone

Wednesday’s Apple press event left a few unanswered questions, like when AT&T will allow its iPhone 4 users to access the Personal Hotspot feature of iOS 4.3, which lets you share your 3G connection with up to five devices at once over Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and USB. Today, AT&T spokesperson Seth Bloom revealed the details of the carrier’s support, saying “To utilize this feature, customers will need to subscribe to the DataPro 4GB, $45 tethering data plan.” That’s basically the $25/month DataPro plan with 2 GB of data, plus the $20/month add-on tethering plan. There was never really any doubt that AT&T would offer Personal Hotspot support, since rival Verizon has it already. Will AT&T subscribers mind adding another $20 per month to their already-high bills? That would probably depend on how many mobile devices they have. If you’re a frequent traveler who carries an iPad and a laptop in addition to your iPhone, then the extra $20 is going to be cheaper than separate data plans for all your devices. If you carry the iPhone all the time but mostly use your other devices at home or at the office, then maybe you won’t get your $20 worth. .

What I’m wondering is how soon AT&T (and Verizon) will be raising their rates for this service. Both carriers are phasing out their unlimited data plans just as more customers are buying iPhones and other smartphones.
