AT&T and Verizon Air Dueling iPhone Ads

The battle for the hearts (and dollars) of iPhone lovers is on, as the nation’s two top carriers try to convince customers that their experience will be better on the company’s network. Each goes straight for the bulls-eye, stressing what one can do that the other can’t. AT&T’s ad is entitled “Answer,” and shows a typical bumbling TV husband trying to convince his wife he didn’t really forget their anniversary by trying unsuccessfully to search for a fancy restaurant. The poor guy’s having problems because the Verizon CDMA network won’t let users talk and browse the net at the same time. As he runs out of the office still talking, the message is: “Only AT&T’s network lets your iPhone talk and surf at the same time.”

Fair enough. Next we come to the Verizon spot, dubbed “Verizon Test Man with Phone.” Since Verizon’s trump card is its exemplary record of the fewest dropped calls, that’s what they’re pushing here. This one touts all the cool features of the iPhone, while implying it’s been held back by inferior service—until now. The spot ends with that nerdy Verizon guy intoning, “Yes, I can hear you now.” OK, both sides have their good and bad points, and it’s up to the consumer which carrier best suits his own individual needs.
