Apple Reports Booming iPhone Sales

One day after Apple CEO Steve Jobs shocked the world with the announcement that he would be taking an open-ended leave of absence to take care of health issues, the company he helms released a report revealing phenomenal sales numbers. The most impressive was that iPhone sales in the final quarter of 2010 were 86% higher than those of the same quarter of 2009. This followed a 91% increase the previous quarter. That’s a lot of iPhones! How many? For the 2010 holiday quarter, 16.2 million units at an average selling price of $652 including subsidies by wireless companies. Jobs sent this statement: “We had a phenomenal holiday quarter with record Mac, iPhone and iPad sales. We are firing on all cylinders and we’ve got some exciting things in the pipeline for this year including iPhone 4 on Verizon which customers can’t wait to get their hands on.” Which brings us to the subject of the Verizon iPhone, which should greatly increase the sales of Apple’s smartphone when it hits stores next month.

Will it become more difficult to get an iPhone in 2011? When the iPhone 4 debuted in summer 2010, there were long waits when demand exceeded production. According to DigiTimes, Apple has ramped up production and it prepared to turn out 15 million CDMA iPhone 4s in 2011. If iPhone sales continue to climb as they have over the last year, Apple just might need every one of those phones.
