Owners of the GSM iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad 2, iPad, and the third- and fourth-generation iPod touch got a new update from Apple today. iOS 4.3.1 is intended to fix several minor bugs, and is more of a minor security and maintenance upgrade than a major upgrade. The main changes are: Fixes an occasional graphics glitch on iPod touch (4th generation); Resolves bugs related to activating and connecting to some cellular networks; Fixes image flicker when using Apple Digital AV Adapter with some TVs and Resolves an issue authenticating with some enterprise web services. That part about bugs in connecting could refer to the reported problems users are having with Wi-Fi on the iPad 2. These connection-dropping glitches sound suspiciously like what happened last year with the iPad 1, so maybe Apple’s found a way to fix this one, too. There is no update provided for the CDMA Verizon iPhone 4, which has not had an update since its release last month. Wonder why Verizon customers are left waiting so long? iOS 4.3.1 was rumored to be correcting some battery life problems, but there’s no word yet as to whether that’s happening. Also unknown is whether the update closes a reported security hole.

The newest iOS upgrade was rumored to make the iPad 2 impervious to jailbreaking, but since we’re hearing reports that some hackers have already jailbroken iOS 4.3.1 on the iPhone 4 in just a few hours, I guess we can forget that. The jailbroken iPad 2 can’t be far behind. Maybe Apple will figure out how to foil hackers in time for iOS 5, but I seriously doubt it. All in all, this isn’t an upgrade to get excited about, since there are no hot new features like Personal Hotspot included.
