Top 6 Essential Camera apps for iPhone

When you open the app, you are presented with an old style camera back where you can immediately take a shot with the standard style set already selected.

Pressing the arrow in the bottom right will 'flip' the camera round and you can see the front. From here you can change the lenses, film, flash and even buy more items to trick out your camera even more.

Clicking in to the Hipstamart in app store allows you to but for 99c new films or lenses, giving you even more control over your shots. It's a nice use of in-app purchases, and you will no doubt want to buy all the add ons within about an hour.

Another cute feature is the 'flash', obviously the iPhone doesn't have a flash, but Hipstamatic does a great job of simulating a flash in your shots to give them extra depth. On some of the more extreme films you can choose this gives an amazingly authentic effect.

Shaking the iPhone will randomly choose a lens, film, and flash combo, and give you extraordinary results every time. Here are some example shots taken on randomize. Same scene, different combo.

Hipstamatic in our opinion is an essential app if you are an avid camera user, and is a lot of fun. With the obligatory 'upload to facebook' and 'upload to twitter', it's easy to show off your new skills to your friends too!

QuadCamera

QuadCamera is a cute app, it takes shots in quick succession and pieces them together in a grid or a line of images. There are 6 presets that you can apply to your images as you are taking the shots including Black and White, or Vivid colour etc. The super quick app is a real nice way to capture a moment, and makes really great prints.

VERDICT: 91%

TiltShift Gen

Tilt Shift Photography is the age old art that is used to make big areas look like a little minature toy town, usually requiring heaps of complex and expensive equipment. However with TiltShift Gen, all the clever work is done in the iPhone itself.

Using TiltShift Gen is simple, take the photo, choose your blur type (round or straight), set the blur area and choose the amount. Once done, you can adjust the colour density to make it look more 'toy-ish', and then the vignetting at the end to give it a nice graduated border to finish off the shot.

Typically this app would be used to photograph landscapes from height, however a lot of our readers at iPhone User Guide have written in to tell us that using TiltShift Gen when taking group photos or portraits really works well. Why not try it out yourself.

Photo Booth +

Photo Booth + is not so different from QuadCamera, however its only purpose is to take shots that look like the old polaroid machines that you get your passport photos at. Photo Booth + does a great job, and with a customisable timer between shots, this app is really fun, especially when there are a group of you trying to squeeze in the picture.

VERDICT: 88%

Pro HDR

Pro HDR aims to replicate the HDR photography that you can do with big SLR cameras, by taking two shots, one over exposed and one under exposed and then merging the shots.

In principle this should work, and in the right environment it does perfectly, however more often than not, the app doesn't quite hit the mark, HOWEVER, the final effects that it creates are still intriguing and fun, and that's why we've still included it in our top Camera Apps list.

Once you've taken two shots (and held the iPhone very steady in the process!), you will be taken to the editing page, where you can adjust varying colour and brightness levels until you are happy with the results. In this example shown, you can see that it didnt really work out too well (due to the extremely bright sunlight), however the effect is still beautiful, and the app is really fun to use, especially if you want a final shot where everything is in focus.

VERDICT: 72%

ToonPAINT

Toon paint is one of the best tracing packages we've seen both on iPhone and desktop computer, the level of control and ease of use are phenomenal.

Simply take your photo, and ToonPAINT will immediately process the shot, and allow you to adjust the lines, the grey and the black immediately.

Within seconds you have a realistic traced shot that looks like it was really drawn with a pen rather than the basic trace tools in most packages. If you want to go further, you can fill in areas with 'paint', and really cartoonify your shot, but in our experience, it's best used with simple black and white traces.

VERDICT: 92%
