Opera - was it worth the wait? We don't think so. |

Why don't we like Opera for iPhone?
Multitouch issues

I just tried to zoom IN to the page, and it did for a moment, then it flickered and jumped back out to this view. Also, note how the site compares to the actual site, why is the background cut off at the sides?
Goodbye JQuery

Touch User Guide uses JQuery to fade up the images on load, just like Mashable does, however in Opera these just all sit as grey image placeholders for some reason.
Low Quality Images

Opera compresses all your images on the site server side, so when you download a site, you are actually browsing a version of the site on Opera's servers, whilst this sounds great, actually, it results in low quality images that are heavily JPG'd and seeing as most of the iPhone browsing experience is all about zooming in and out, when you zoom in and see a low quality image, it's quite annoying.
Opera suffers from the same CSS issues as its desktop brother, more complex CSS features that we are used to in Safari such as rounded corners and drop shadows are simply not available in Opera which makes it not feel so premium. Multisite loading at the same time is cool, but we've found Safari does that perfectly well in OS 4.0 already. Animation, zooming, scrolling and sliding appear to be low frame rate and erratic.
Sadly we're not too impressed with Opera for iPhone, if you want a quick browsing experience or are concerned about load times and data usage then use Opera, but personally, I like to have things look great on my iPhone so I'll be sticking with Safari.
