That's what happened with Vonage this week.

Vonage has just announced that their iPhone App has been approved by Apple. However, the iPhone app won’t be available immediately on the iPhone App Store as they are currently conducting a beta test and general availability will be announced at a later date.

Vonage is a VoIP network and SIP company that provides telephone service via a broadband connection. We had heard reports last week that the approval of their iPhone app had got delayed due to some technical issue. But looks like the issue has been resolved as they just made an announcement that their iPhone app has been approved by Apple:

'Vonage has announced that Apple approved its mobile application for iPhone and iPod Touch. Vonage is currently conducting a beta test and general availability will be announced at a later date.'

However, it is unlikely that Vonage’s iPhone app will work over AT&T’s mobile network and like Skype and other VoIP iPhone apps will be limited to work only over Wi-Fi. You might remember that when Apple had responded to FCC’s letter explaining the reason for rejecting Google Voice related iPhone apps they had pointed out: “There is a provision in Apple’s agreement with AT&T that obligates Apple not to include functionality in any Apple phone that enables a customer to use AT&T’s cellular network service to originate or terminate a VoIP session without obtaining AT&T’s permission.” The stock market seems to love the news of a Vonage iPhone App. Bloomberg had reported that the shares of Vonage had jumped 36% based on speculation that it will release an iPhone app and with today's news of approval Vonage shares are up more than 40% (via Yahoo Finance) in after-hours trading.
