Screenshot of BreakClassic iPhone homebrew game - Image 1The developers of no less than three Breakout clones have been recently contacted by the Atari legal team, and demanded that they remove their games on Apple's App Store due to copyright infringements.

iPhone developer Bootant (BreakClassic, BreakTouch 3D) and Spiffyware (Super Pong 2) have already pulled out their respective games from the App Store. Both developers are students and have expressed doubts regarding the legal scope of the demands made by Atari.

Another Breakout/Pong clone developer, Gyrocade, was given a similar demand for the game 3D Vector Pong. However, instead of pulling out the game from App Store, the dev opted to change the game's name to 3D Vector Ball instead. No word from Atari has been heard whether the change made was enough to satisfy them or not.

A similar case was also noted when student developer Noah Witherspoon was contacted by the creators of Tetris to take down the popular Tris game from the App Store.

I thought Magnavox held the patent to the Pong, not Atari?
