The iPad is a wonderful gadget which also serves the purpose of a mini computer. You can store large amount of your personal data such as contact lists, email messages, photos and applications for social networks. So we should think seriously on how we could protect our private information stored on these iPads. According to Jason Rouse, security consultant at Cigital, people are carry in iPads their much needed private information which if leaked would cause many serious effects to them. These iPads can be under any malware attack as that of a personal computer. You should be very careful while accessing unknown Wi-Fi networks as the chances of phishing are more in these networks. Here are some of the four privacy and security tips that you can make use of to protect the information’s in your iPad. 1. Lock your iPad – This is the basic security feature that comes with every iPad. Locking an iPad is simple and easy. You would have to choose the “settings” icon on home menu and select “General” and then “Passcode Lock.” The next step is to set a four digit password for your iPad which would ensure that no one else would be able to access your gadget. There is an option to choose the time interval before a code is asked again. Mr. Rouse is of the opinion that the iPad settings should be set in a way such that if someone tries to access our gadget by entering the wrong password ten times, then to erase all information’s stored on the iPad. A backup can be created in your computer so as to prevent the loss of information by unknowingly deleting it. These codes will not protect your iPad from thieves who would connect these gadgets into the computer and access the information. You could then buy a physical case with a lock so as to ensure that no else would access your iPad. 2. Find and disable a stolen or lost device – Apple’s Mobileme service has a unique feature called “Find My iPad”. This application is used to find out any lost device. You would have to sign up for MobileMe and then activate the feature by just logging into your account. Follow the instructions that come up in the screen and find out the location where you lost the gadget on the map. If you discover the place that it has been lost for example a bar, you should select the “Remote Lock” option which would automatically lock your phone. A four digit password code should be entered so as to not allow any one open your gadget. Then you can enter any message that would come up in your iPad screen automatically. Finding this lost iPad in the bar is very easy as you could use the MobileMe feature so as to create some noise which would make your task easy. If you fail to find your iPad, then you would have to just click the "Remote Wipe” option which would preset the iPad into its factory settings. 3. Use complex passwords for different websites - There are several applications available that we can choose to hold, organize and use complex passwords for each of our online accounts. There is a password manager application for the Mac called ipassword which sells this application for iPad also for $7.99. You can select any of your personal accounts and a link would appear which would take you to a login screen where the password and username would have been already inserted. This application can be used to safely store your password of any websites. There are many other password applications available in the market. Some of them are eWallet which cost $9.99 for a full version and mSecure which can be bought for $2.99. 4. Delete history, cache and cookies in Safari – You might not want your wife to see all those websites which you have visited to buy a birthday gift for her or you might be unsatisfied with the advertisers who track all your online movements. Now there is a solution for all these. You can protect all these private information by deleting the Safari browsers Web history cache and cookies. Select the “settings” option on your home screen, select “Safari” and then the respective buttons for all that information’s that you need to clear out.
