Restrict your iPad.

In the iPad, you have the options of restricting its functionalities through additional controls. For example, you can restrict the access to YouTube, explicit media content, Safari as well as installing applications. This function of restriction can also be passcoded by a corporate administrator and not changed around by the iPad owner. This can also be useful for parents to restrict some functionality for their children’s iPad. Use MobileMe. Using Apple’s MobileMe service is a good option when you lose/misplace your iPad. It offers many services for backing up, securing and syncing data. You have options such as displaying a message on your iPad or implementing a passcode lock or completing wiping off your data. You can also get the location of your iPad from your computer so that you can go pick it up before it’s too late. You also get it to sync with several other devices such as iDisk if you really need the information.

There are however some limitations of MobileMe. For example, for iPad to receive commands from Mobile Me it has to be connected to a cellular or Wi-Fi network. So if you own a Wi-Fi only iPad and it is not connected to any wireless network it is basically useless. 3G versions of the iPad are better off though the same principle is applied to them as well. However, someone who is trying to steal your iPad will definitely have turned the wireless connections off before starting to use it making MobileMe useless. Another safety feature for the iPad is that because it supports Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync a remote wipe can be triggered via ActiveSync. Additional controls as well as extended password policies are also possible visa ActiveSync.

Be careful while jailbreaking. Jailbreaking iPad has become popular but it comes with its own security concerns. Because installing non-apple apps results in access beyond Apple’s own reach there is a possibility of losing some controls which Apple have put in place for the iPad’s safety. Basically jailbreaking may make your iPad’s security unpredictable so be careful. Also as we all know, jailbreaking voids your iPad’s warranty automatically. For more security tips for the iPad please stay tune for the final part of this series.
