It teaches eye-hand coordination. It’s magical to see how a small child reacts to the iPad’s touchscreen for the first time. Most children instinctively figure out how what they do with their fingers affects what they see on the screen. This skill is valuable in helping kids do schoolwork in the future. It teaches art without the mess. Any parent of older children can recall early experiments with painting that wrecked the house and ran up major cleaning bills. With the iPad, the kids can indulge their interest in colors and shapes by splashing vitual paint all over the iPad screen instead of throwing the real thing against the living room wall. Long battery life The iPad can keep your child busy for hours on long trips. With up to ten hours of battery life, the iPad can keep the little ones amused and stimulated with games, books, movies and learning. A child who’s happily occupied is less likely to throw tantrums because he’s bored.

It lets children keep in contact with loved ones. Try getting a kid to write notes to grandma using a paper and pen. It just won’t happen. But if you let the child use the iPad’s social networking capabilities to communicate with faraway loved ones via messages, e-mail, videos and photos, the whole family will grow closer. It lets the child learn at his own level. One big problem with the educational system is that children develop at different rates, but are all expected to learn the same material. With educational programs on the iPad, children can progress at their own levels, moving on to the next only when they’re ready. Toddlers can get a head start on learning their colors, words and numbers, then move on to more challenges. It gives kids a jump start on using computers. It seems odd now to think people used to take courses in how to use computers, because it’s second nature to most adults and kids are learning by the time they’re toilet trained. When small children have access to a touchscreen device, they have a head start on being able to pick up more complicated computer programs as they get older.

It helps kids explore and develop new interests. The iPad’s wide variety of apps for children, many of them free, can open up a whole new world for young minds. Kids who might yawn in geography class can take virtual tours of faraway places with iPad apps on travel. Games The App Store has tons of games for kids, with more being added every day. Games for children not only provide stimulation and fun, they can introduce new subjects and make them interesting. Apple’s new Game Center lets kids sharpen their skills by competing with others. The child won’t outgrow it. What parent hasn’t been frustrated to find the toy their child had to have last year has been abandoned as his interests changed. While the iPad is expensive upfront, it can grow with the child as new apps and features are added. Apple’s tab is one of the very few gifts coveted by both kids and teens this year.

It fosters a love for reading. Nothing gives a child a good start on life like developing reading skills. My mom taught me how to read before I started pre-school, and on getting there, I was surprised to see others couldn’t read yet. I asked my mom, “Why can’t these kids read already?” Learning to read as soon as the child is able gives him an advantage that will last throughout his life. The iPad makes reading fun for the child, as books are incorporating interactive features that bring subjects like history alive. The ever-growing selection of books available for the iPad should keep your child interested for years to come!
