iPad News: Will iPad2 Have Better Graphics Than Xbox 360?

CEO of games developers Fishlabs Michael Schade recently told a Develop conference, “I think you can expect some time next year to have rendering capabilities on mobile devices superior to the Xbox 360”. He went on to add, “And I believe by the end of the year the ‘iDevices’ could have sold 120m copies, which puts them close to a par with the PS2’s 140m”. Some time ago we reported here on iPad.net that computing analysts predict that mobile devices will overtake static desktops by as early as 2015. With the iPad at the head of the mobile devices queue, does this mean that the gamers’ platform of choice will change from Xbox 360 to a new souped up iPad? I don’t think so. As far as I’m concerned, it’s all hot air fuelled by smoke and mirrors. I will certainly concede that the iPad’s HD screen is certainly up to the displaying end of the graphics job, but that is only the outcome of a mass of background processing. Current games available for iPad are excellent within their own marketplace, but there is absolutely no comparison to similar genre games on Xbox 360. The iPad doesn’t carry enough energy, not enough memory and is woefully lacking in the processing power necessary to produce such advanced graphics. The difference between the Xbox’s ATI GPU and the iPad’s PowerVR GPU is immense. To place a similar GPU inside an iPad as it currently stands would rapidly drain the battery and cause the tablet to overheat. Then there are the controls. A touch screen control is excellent for the level of gaming currently presented on iPad, but would be totally insufficient for any sophisticated Xbox style games. Better graphics on an iPad than on an Xbox 360? Give me a break…!
