iPad News: Will Future iPads Have Multiple Speakers?

What could make it more pleasurable to listen to music or watch streaming video on your iPad? How about multiple dynamic speakers? According to Apple Insider, a patent titled “Audio Channel Assignment for Audio Output in a Movable Device” has been applied for that outlines several stereo speakers placed on a mobile device. Sound would be adjusted according to orientation, so it would be easy to hear stereo sound, no matter how you hold the iPad. The patent was applied for on July 6, 2009, which would have been after Apple had started developing the iPad. An iPad with high-quality stereo sound would certainly enhance some activities, like watching TV shows or movies and playing games. On the down side, extra speakers would add weight to the iPad and drain the battery faster.

Whether this feature would be worth having has to depend on how you use the iPad. Do you want a slimmer, lighter package for use on the go or a possibly heavier one better suited to enjoying media? Since the iPad 2.0 is in production now and the iPad 3.0 is probably still on the drawing board, Apple has time to decide whether this is a feature worth pursuing.
