The iPad 2 is right around the corner and will include lots of new bells and whistles—we can be sure of that. What we don’t know is exactly which features are real and which are just figments of an iPad lover’s imagination. Recent rumors have suggested that the next generation iPad might have Retina Display, which is already available on the iPhone. Sounds good in theory, but not so great in practice, as one blogger did the math and says the iPad’s nice big screen is just too big to accommodate Retina Display. Thanks to Ryan Block for these calculations: Retina Display requires 330 pixels per inch, and for the smaller screen of the iPhone, that’s 614,000 pixels at 960 x 640. But try to convert that to the 9.7 display of the iPad and things get complicated. Since the iPad display is 1024 x 768, or 786,432 pixels, that’s way more than the processing hardware can handle. To approximate the clarity of the iPhone screen, the iPad would need 2560 x 1920 or 4,915,200 pixels—six times the number on the current screen. So, while FaceTime is likely to be included on the iPad 2, Retina Display isn’t happening anytime soon.
