iPad News: Verizon Drops Price of Galaxy Tab to $500

The market is about to be flooded with new tablets, most of them running the Android system. Is that why Verizon is dropping the price on the Sansung Galaxy Tab, to make it more competitive? Starting this week, Verizon customers can pick up a Galaxy Tab for $500 without a contract and also get $60 in movie rentals from Blockbuster or the Samsung Media Hub. Since the Galaxy Tab was just released in November, this seems awfully early for such a price drop. After all, the iPad has been out since April, and is still selling briskly at the original retail price. But CES is looming later this week, and will bring with it fresh young tablets looking to take on the existing market. One of the most promising is Motorola’s hideously-named Droid Xoom, which comes packing a much faster processor, larger screen and newer Honeycomb OS.

There are rumors that Samsung has a larger Galaxy coming, one that would be a more obvious competitor for the iPad—are the smaller tabs being closed out to make room for the next model? Verizon is currently offering the iPad for $629 including a MiFi bundle, a deal that sounds better than the $500 Galaxy Tab with no connectivity included. I’m expecting more price drops on this model as the field gets more crowded, so I don’t advise running down to your Verizon store just yet.
