iPad News: UK Carrier Offers Subsidized iPad

UK carrier Orange has just released its pricing plan for the iPad, and offers a more attractive package than we can get here in the US. Orange’s prices are: £199 ($312) - 16GB, £249 ($391) - 32GB and £349 ($626) - 64GB. Of course, there’s the obligatory two-year contract at £27 ($42)/month that includes 1GB anytime data and 1GB monthly for daytime usage, plus 3GB of BT Openzone Wi-Fi per month. Rumor has it that Three will be the UK’s sole 3G carrier, and will be debuting an iPad plan soon. I have to wonder why we’re not getting similar deals here. Is Apple experimenting in the UK before offering a subsidized program to US carriers? An iPad for a little over $300 would certainly attract a lot of buyers, even with that onerous two-year contract attached.
