iPad News: The Daily Delayed Indefinitely

Rupert Murdoch’s ambitious periodical The Daily has been delayed more times than most of us can keep track of. As recently as a few days ago, things were looking brighter for the iPad-centric news publication, with a splashy press conference scheduled for January 19 at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco, California. But alas, that’s cancelled and the whole project has been put on hold, reputedly for several weeks. So what’s the holdup? The Daily has been in the news so long, I feel like I’ve been reading it for a year or two already, but in reality it’s still a very expensive figment of Ropert Murdoch’s imagination. Just when it seems to be getting closer to fruition, there’s another problem. There’s been no public statement about what went wrong this time around, but News Corp. is hinting that the fault lies with Apple. The site for the digital newsmagazine contains several hidden goodies, including a mockup of early issues of The Daily and buttons to scroll through the articles, as well as links to social networking sites. Rumors claim The Daily’s editorial staff has been putting together sample issues for the last several weeks. Sounds like they’re ready—but Apple isn’t.

Supposedly, the problem is the iTunes feature that allows subscribers to receive a new issue every day without requesting it. Way back in the fall, when Apple debuted the upgrade iOS 4.2, we were hearing that iOS 4.3 was on the way in December and would include the iTunes subscription option. The beta tester of iOS 4.3 was finally released to developers this week, but isn’t expected to become available to the public until March. Is that really why The Daily keeps getting postponed?
