iPad News: Steve Jobs is Still the Boss at Apple

When Steve Jobs took a sudden medical leave three weeks ago “to focus on my health,” many feared the worst, especially given the Apple CEO’s fight against cancer and resulting liver transplant. But don’t write him off yet, because a new report from the Wall Street Journal claims that Jobs is still calling the shots at Apple, taking business meetings on the phone and from his home. Jobs has also been spotted on the Apple campus and in nearby Palo Alto. Why can’t this workaholic just take a little time off and relax? Because that’s not his style, and the CEO is still running the show, even if he has to do it by phone. Jobs is being especially hands-on when it comes to the iPad 2 and the iPhone 5, both due this year. This is pretty much the same MO Jobs adhered to during his two previous absences in 2004 and 2009, when Apple COO Tim Cook stepped up to run the day-to-day operations of the company. Of course, what people really want to know is when Jobs will be well enough to make a personal appearance at an Apple event. For the last couple of years, Jobs has taken part in Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference, giving the keynote address and unveiling the latest iPhone model. The WWDC is scheduled for early June this year, but no public announcement has been made by Apple as to its participation.

An Apple spokesperson released this statement about Jobs’ condition, but otherwise the company maintains its silence: “Steve is the CEO of Apple and during his medical leave he'll continue to be involved in major strategic decisions.” Steve Jobs is such a presence at Apple’s media events, it’s hard to imagine one without him. Hopefully, we won’t have to.
