iPad News: Some Breaking Rumors About a New iPad

Digitimes spokesman Mingchi Kuo revealed that the new iPad would benefit from the increased power generated by a ARM Cortex A9 Processor, allowing more complex apps to run smoother and faster. Hopefully the new processor will mean that streaming data from a WiFi or 3G connections will be seamless. There have been rumblings that the current ARM processor utilized by the iPad can’t handle the smooth operation of many of the Apple apps, especially geo-locational tools. It looks as though Apple will also increase the iPad RAM capacity, effectively doubling it from the current 256MB to 512MB. Frankly I see no reason why the first generation iPad wasn’t gifted with this capacity; it is no real leap of innovation to increase a tablet’s RAM. Perhaps the most significant change is the possibility of a smaller-sized screen. Digitimes reports that a new iPad will be available with a 7 inch screen, running alongside a 9.7 inch screen version. This smaller version would use a 1024x768 pixel screen on the same resolution as the IPS LCD based screen, the same technology used in the "retina" display of the iPhone 4. It is understandable why Apple would want to increase the power and RAM capacity of its next generation iPad. I would hope that some extra obvious additions would also be available, such as the much-sort-after USB port. However, the reasoning behind releasing a smaller version of iPad remains unclear. With decreased size comes decreased functionality and usability. Perhaps Apple is getting wary of what the competition will release in the new battlefield of the tablet wars, and a smaller iPad could cover more of the potential market. The other thing that intrigues me is why Apple would choose to release a new version of iPad during early 2011. Haven’t they heard of the Holidays and the Christmas markets?
