iPad News: RIM Chief Fires Back at Jobs

Earlier this week, Apple CEO Steve Jobs predicted the 7” tablets now entering the market will be “dead on arrival” because their small screens can’t compete with the iPad’s large view and huge collection of apps. Predictably, the rival companies releasing 7” tabs aren’t happy about his remarks. RIM, the company behind the BlackBerry is readying its PlayBook, which has a 7” screen, works closely with the BlackBerry smartphone and is being aimed at the business customer. RIM's co-CEO Jim Balsillie released his rejoinder today: “For those of us who live outside of Apple’s distortion field, we know that 7-inch tablets will actually be a big portion of the market, and we know that Adobe Flash support actually matters to customers who want a real web experience. "We also know that while Apple’s attempt to control the ecosystem and maintain a closed platform may be good for Apple, developers want more options. We think many customers are getting tired of being told what to think by Apple. As usual, whether the subject is antennas, Flash or shipments, there is more to the story and sooner or later, even people inside the distortion field will begin to resent being told half a story.” Yeah, blah, blah, blah, “distortion field,” “Flash rules,” “closed platform,” etc. The bottom line is, if Apple’s competitors want to make their products more desirable than the iPad, they need to do several things: offer more features beyond cameras and Flash capability, come up with a few thousand apps real fast and make the price considerably less than Apple’s. Sure, there are the hardcore Apple hatas who’ll buy an overpriced Android device for spite, but most consumers are looking for quality and value, and the products that don’t deliver those just might be “dead on arrival.”
