iPad News: NY Times to Debut E-Book Best Seller List

Digital publishing has grown 190% this year due to the expanding popularity of Amazon’s Kindle e-book reader and the introduction of the iPad, so the New York Times is adding e-books to its respected best-seller lists. Times editor of news surveys and election analysis Janet Elder explained the addition: “We’ve had our eye on e-book sales since e-books began. It was clear that e-books were taking a greater and greater share of total sales, and we wanted to be able to tell our readers which titles were selling and how they fit together with print sales.” This is a smart move for the Times, advertising-wise. The Association of American Publishers estimates e-books were responsible for $304.6 million in sales during the first three quarters of 2010, and publishing experts anticipate they will comprise 25 percent of total sales over the next couple of years. The e-book best-seller lists will be added early in 2011 and include both fiction and nonfiction titles.
