iPad News: News Corp. Confirms Tablet Publication

Just last month, News Corp. shelved plans for a digital newsstand, but the media giant isn’t giving up on creating specialized content for the iPad. On Wednesday, an exec for the company revealed to journalists that News Corp. will be debuting a new publication custom designed for the tablet computer. News Corp. CEO for Europe and Asia James Murdoch gave reporters a hint about what to expect. “It’s a tablet-only product and it’s very exciting. You’ll hear more about that soon.” Murdoch acknowledges that this is an untried frontier for the company. “The tablet in general, it lends itself to a type of journalism that is really new. These really are becoming our flagship products, even though they’re very much in their infancy.” Creating a tablet-based publication free of the shackles that come with print certainly sounds promising. The current 24/7 news cycle has been spawned by the internet, and readers have become accustomed to getting their news as it happens. By the time something gets printed and distributed, it’s yesterday’s news—or last week’s, or last months. It will be very interesting to see how News Corp. translates the old-fashioned newspaper into the mediums of the present and future.
