iPad News: News Corp App Delayed Until 2011?

Rupert Murdoch has been a supporter of the iPad since the tablet computer debuted earlier this year, and for several months the media mogul has been working closely with Apple to launch a newspaper/magazine app just for the new device. The Daily was expected to launch by the end of 2010, but according to sources at Financial Times, it’s not happening until after the first of the year. Rumor has it that Apple is still balking at allowing publication apps to offer subscriptions through the iTunes Store. This rumor contradicts another rumor that iOS 4.3, expected in December, will include subscription support through iTunes, but that’s how rumors go. At a price of $.99 per week, The Daily sounds promising, especially if it’s updated several times a day and offers a selection of interactive features. Murdoch has stated previously that the iPad could “save newspapers,” and seems to be putting his money where his mouth is. I have to wonder why Apple is being so stubborn about the whole subscription business, given that it’s obviously going to happen at some point and the company stands to make a lot of money from them.
