iPad News: New Netflix Update Drops DVD Queueing

Every time I drive by my local Blockbuster store, I wonder why it’s still there. Nobody I know has been inside that place in years, or at least since we subscribed to Netflix. Well, it finally happened. When I cruised by yesterday, there was a big “Store Closing” sign hanging over the front of the store. It was inevitable—when even people in Hollywood won’t rent DVDs from you, it’s time to hang it up. Blockbuster’s big mistake was failing to learn from rival Netflix and get into streaming video. Netflix has found streaming video to be so popular and lucrative that they’re rumored to be phasing out physical DVDs. 2011 could be the year to do it, as the number of mobile devices that allow streaming video is expected to explode—especially the iPad and other tablets. This week, Netflix updated its app for the iPad to make it easier to watch streaming video—and harder to add movies to your DVD queue. The newer, sleeker interface looks more like the Netflix app for the iPhone and offers users just four menu choices— Home, Genres, Search, and Instant Queue. If you use “Search” to look for a film that’s not one of Netflix’s “Watch Instantly” options, you get a message saying “disc only.” Want to add the movie to your DVD queue? This isn’t the app for that. You have to use your browser to go to Netflix.com to add the film to your DVD queue.

Predictably, this change isn’t going over so well with some Netflix customers. But they’ll probably just have to get used to it, since Netflix has made it very clear that the future is in streaming video. This is good news for iPad owners, since it means that Netflix will be providing more streaming content over the next several years.
