iPad News: Microsoft Will Unveil iPad Rivals at CES

It just wouldn’t be CES without Microsoft announcing a bunch of new products that they swear will revolutionize the industry, almost all of which subsequently fall flat. At the last CES 11 months ago, Microsoft chief Steve Ballmer touted his company’s brand new line of tablet PCs, showing off a prototype of the HP Slate. Alas, the HP Slate finally limped off the drawing board months later to sell an underwhelming 9,000 units. Meanwhile, just a couple of weeks after CES, Apple’s Steve Jobs announced the iPad, which went on to sell several million units following its release in April. Proving he doesn’t believe that old adage about the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over but expecting different results, Ballmer will be back at CES next month—with more Windows tablets. This new batch is expected to be from several brands including Samsung and Dell, as well as others. Samsung has produced what is so far the only real competitor for the iPad, the Samsung Galaxy Tab, which has already sold a million units worldwide. According to a report in the New York Times, Samsung will be debuting a new tab described as “similar in size and shape to the Apple iPad, although it is not as thin. It also includes a unique and slick keyboard that slides out from below for easy typing.” How exciting—sounds like a netbook, but more expensive. Since MS isn’t likely to create a device as user-friendly and fun as they iPad, they’re going for their tried-and-true market—the business user. A source told the Times: “The company believes there is a huge market for business people who want to enjoy a slate for reading newspapers and magazines and then work on Microsoft Word, Excel or PowerPoint while doing work.” Well, if they’re wrong, there’s always CES 2012.
